how to optimize google adsense to make more money from blogging
Google adsense is one of the most popular programs used to make money from blogging. Billions of bloggers publishing adsense on their blog always wanted to know how to increase their earnings from adsense. Usually the CTR(click through ratio) of adsense is from 0.5% to 2.5% for blogs having 1000 or more page views per day. But if we can increase CTR we can earn more from same no. of page views.
So here I would like to share my ideas and tips on optimizing google adsense i.e. how to increase CTR. Please note that these ideas and tips are based on my own experiments carried out on 20 blogs.
Let us have a look at the tips one by one. (Some of you might be knowing few of these but please read all the tips)
1) The placement of the ad unit – Should be within the post and ideally below the post title and above the post content. Please note that it should be properly aligned in middle of post body. Use
In some cases you have to display the ad unit beside the post content i.e. on right hand side of post content.
Also note that whether the ads are in post or sidebar the right half of the blog screen will get more clicks because most of the people use the mouse with their right hand.
Hence 3 column template with post column in between the right and left side bar is better.
2) The colors of the ad unit - The background and border color should match the background color of the post body. The title color can be blue or matching to the blog text color. Other colors you can choose matching to blog theme and for white background, google default palette is fine. You can also try option of selecting Multiple Palettes which keeps on rotating colors, for 48 hours and check whether CTR is increased or not.
3) The size of the ad unit within the post can be 336X280 or 300X250. In some cases where you are displaying the ad unit on right hand side of the post content, the size can be 250x250 or smaller which ever suits your blog. In case of only picture blog, I have used 120x240 size ad unit on right hand side of the posts.
4) The font size of the ad unit should be medium or large and font family should be Arial or Verdana. You can change this by going to Manage Ads>Edit ad settings.
5) There is option of choosing what to display if no relevant ads are available. Out of the three options, you can choose second option and enter URL of your another blog, so that this blog will be displayed within ad units. You should take care that there should be no google ads in top left of this URL. This is a good way of displaying ads of your low traffic blog on a high traffic blog. Or display your affiliate products page or site.
6) The maximum no. of ad units that can be displayed on a page are three but the total no. of ads displayed depends on the size of the ad unit i.e. in 336X280 ad unit, four text ads can be displayed, so three such ad units will display 4x3=12 ads per page. Some of the ad units can display 2 or 3 ads per unit, making total no. of ads 6 or 9 per page. What I have observed is (not always) less the no. of ads per page, more is the CPC (cost per click). So keep watch on no. of ads per page. CPC of ads also depends on other factors, but discussing that will be off the topic.
7) Link units – can be placed 1) below the header 2) in the side bar with the labels (categories) 3) below the post content.
With the colors matching to the blog colors, they also look like links/labels of the blog, creating higher chances of click. Please note that link unit requires two clicks to generate earnings. In ‘Advance report’ option you can find out how many link clicks got converted to earning clicks.
So even after proper color and placement, if they are not giving higher CTR, please remove them.
8) Adsense for search can be placed in header or upper area of blog. Please note that it requires two clicks to earn from this search unit. So one good option is selecting ‘Search type’ as ‘only sites I select’ while generating code for search unit. Enter all your blogs and websites there, so search results will be from those sites only. Check statistics of search unit in advance reports and decide whether to keep it or not. It has not generated much earnings for me.
9) Always create channel for your ad unit and give relevant name to ad unit as well as the channel so that you can view the performance and statistics in ‘Advance Reports’ and find out which ad unit is performing better.
Also add description with better keywords in custom channels and select proper ad location because this will be seen by advertisers as available place to place their ads.
10) Try to increase your blog rss subscribers and use google adsense for feed. Normally CPC is higher for ads in feed than ads on the blog.
11) Download and install google adsense preview tool
You can visit your blog using IE and right click and select google adsense preview tool and find out which ads will get displayed in which country .You can note down the URL and if you do not want them to get displayed on your blog you can block them by going to Adsense Setup> Competitive Ad Filter . Please read google adsense help for this.
12) Go to Adsense Setup>Ad Review Center > Filtered Categories .You will get % of recent earnings and recent impressions. If earnings are less for a particular category (with respect to impressions) please tick mark and filter them so that next time ads of these categories will not get displayed.
13) Visitor tend to exit from your blog using different links so try to study exit links from your visitors statistics and try to remove unwanted outgoing links from your blog. E.g. I removed a link to statcounter.com in visitors counter and created a counter without link.
14) Check whether all your posts are there in major search engines. One of my blog has 650 posts and search engine has indexed only 360 posts. So this will give me less traffic and less clicks. You can use sitemap and google webmaster tools to solve this problem.
15) I have read that one should write on higher paying keywords but this can not be a tip because say higher paying keywords are Lawyer, Insurance….Now if my blog is on Blog traffic tips, how can I write on these topics? So it is true only for few blogs which are writing on any subject. Only thing you can do is try using better keywords related to your post subject, in post title and content.
Another tip I have read is increase blog traffic but this is a different topic and it is not relevant to optimizing google adsense as it does not increase CTR.
16) From visitors statistics you can find from which country you are getting maximum clicks ( generally it is U.S.) so if you are using paid advertising to advertise your blog, select geographical locations from which you are getting more clicks.
Some times there is sudden peak up or drop in CTR which is due to type of ads getting displayed on our blog and we can not control it so I am not discussing it here.
Please try above tips one at a time and apply it for 48 to 72 hours and then check whether CTR has increased or not. Please share your experience and any new tip you find out!

Why I start blogging for money on the internet?
Internet is a golden mine and if you know how to used it you can earn lot’s of money. Money makes us rich. Nobody can tell me that this is not true. There are lots of job opportunities in the world, great jobs with good income and you will ask yourselves why I chose this one. OK. I will explain to you. I used to work on drilling ship as a DPO (Dynamic Position Operator). This is great job with I can say very good monthly wage. I’ve been able to earn around 12-15.000eur per month. I work 28 days and after had 28 days rest, vacation. So for a one day working I get one day vacation, paid vacation. My earnings were 144-180.000eur yearly. So, why I quit? INTERNET MARKETING. Eight months ago I said to my selves that I need to be at home all the time. I want to be my own boss. I want to get up in the morning when I want and start to work when I want. Get lunch where I want and when I want and in the same time have money in my pocket. Who can give you this entire thing on one place? This can give you your home, your computer and internet connection. I start to discover this for me unknown territory. I didn’t know from where to start so I searched here and there. I start to explore how I can earn money on the internet. I find the world AFFILIATE. OK! I can work as an affiliate but what to sell? What to promote? Where, to whom? Who may be interested in my product? This takes me to Clickbank, PayDotCom, CJ, and Amazon.com. Great marketplace where you can find so many different products that you don’t know which one to choose to promote. According me, if you are new in this, the best thing to do is to promote product that you know. Per example if you are snowboarder the best thing to do is to promote snowboard equipment. Choosing product that you already know you will have advantage. It will be easier to make web site for you and full it with good and quality content. If your web page has quality content visitors will come back and you will have more chance to sell the product. And one other thing that you already know is to integrate Google AdSense ads on your pages so if the visitor don’t find what they are searching for they may click on one of your ads and you can earn in this way too. Website with certain niche topics in a combination with Google AdSense are, looking from my way of thinking, GOLDEN MINE. This is better than win on the lottery. On the lottery you can win once or never but with this you can make very good money every day.
OK, before I start to explain you what I’m doing I will present you some fact that are cruel reality in this job:
FACT #1: You will have to spend some money that you will able later to make money. You will need an advertising budget or lots of time. But remember TIME IS MONEY! I will explain this. To sell a product you will need customer, people who may be interested in your product and you will need a web site to bring them there where you present your product. You need VISITORS!!! How to bring hundred of visitors on your site? Trough the social networks you can do this without spending any dollars but you will need time and you will need to work a lot on the internet to bring visitors to your site. Time is money, don’t forget this! Other, faster way is to use PPC programs like Google AdWords and Yahoo Overture to do this. Simply sign up create your own ads and starts bring visitors to your site. Here comes another problem. For this you need to have money. You need to have advertising budget. This will brings immediately traffic to your site and you can expect some earnings in a few minutes. This is the power of PPC traffic. If you don’t know anything about AdWords I suggest that you read Perry Marshall Guide to Google AdWords.
FACT#2: A home based business requires WORK. If you hear from somebody that you need 5min per day is not true. They don’t produce any money. 5min you will need just for start up your computer. I would also like to work 5min per day and earn 3000+ a month and have rest of the day for me to do what ever I like. Marketing your business will take some work and your work will pay you very well.
FACT#3: It may pass some time till you start to earn good money. Nobody can promise you that you will make 3000$ per day starting today. Only thing that I can promise you that the only way you can fail is to quit. If you are in the game always will be possibility to make money.
FACT#4: You must learn to implement effective marketing skills to make any money with any product. The point here is to implement skills that you learn from others affiliate but also tries to be yourselves, be creative, don’t copy!
FACT#5: 95% of you will never succeed. This is the fact and can’t be ignored. If you decide to do this job you must be ready to fail but also you must be able to rise up on the top after that. And if you have will and power to do that you will succeed!

Most of the methods I use require you to spend some money. These methods are low cost and effective. Per example yesterday I purchase one domain name which coast me 14$ for one year. So it come less then 2$ per month and this is really nothing. But before I explain low cost methods I will tell you some free methods to bringing traffic to your site.
Method#1 the signatures file-This method requires few second to set up and it’s free. This is signature file. The signature file is in every mail that leaves my inbox. Just go on set up of your mail and ad signature to it with a link to your site.
Method#2 ezine advertising –ezine article is powerful. Check www.Solo-Ads.com where you can get free, targeted solos just for reading other solos and clicking on their ads.
Method#3 Social Networking sites-Sites like Direct Matches, Wowzza, Giblink, Apsense, Yuwie, Adland Pro, MySpace, Facebook, Ryze and WallSt.net are gathering places for people who work a home based business. By going into these sites and introducing yourself and leaving them with your sig file link, you will be targeting exactly the people you want to work with. Another benefit of these sites is that your profile is often indexed by the search engines. So if you create your profile like a well planned ad you can get FREE Google traffic.
Method#4 Forum posting-Forum posting is a wonderful and enjoyable way to get highly targeted traffic.
Method#5 Blogging- It’s possible to make very nice income from a good blog. If you’ve got AdSense on your blog, there’s a whole range of different thing that you can easily do to increase your traffic and earn extra cash. The first thing you should do is make sure that your blog is set to ping rpc.pingomatic.com as soon as you’ve updated. Pingomatic.com offers a free all-in-one pinging service that covers all the large blog directories and search engine. On Blogger.com, you can find this in your settings. You should also set up RSS feed to let people know when you update.
Method#6 Offline marketing-One of the biggest mistake that people make when they build an Internet business is to forget that there’s a world outside the Internet. Just because you make money out of traffic doesn’t mean you have to source all of that traffic online. This is paid inclusion in the search engine result. I use Google AdWords and Yahoo Overture to generate quality traffic but can be expensive. I recommend you that if you are new to marketing and inexperienced with Google, do not run a Google PPC campaign until you have read Perry Marshall’s THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO GOOGLE ADWORDS. You can get excellent result with AdWords if you know what you are doing and if you don’t..... Hm, you will loose all your money! You know that most important thing in creating AdWords ads are keywords. You will need high paying AdSense keywords to integrate in your Google AdWords. All this you can find in Perry Marshall’s e-book. Word “Keywords” brings as to other thing to discuss. Which keywords to use? You will need lots of keywords and phrases. I will be short and tell you that you will need Keyword Elite software to do this. There you can create keywords list, analyze Pay Per Click listing, analyze keyword competition, finding high paying AdSense keywords and much more. I must tell you the trout that before I purchase that software I spend more on AdWords than earn on AdSense. I realise that without high paying keywords and huge list of keywords I could not make any success in AdSense. The software cost me 176$ but believe me, it worth it!
With Keyword Elite I could generate thousand keywords in a just few minutes. Do you know how much time I save? I could find high paying keywords and write topics that target that keywords make a web site and put some AdSense ads on it and I’m ready to make money from those ads.
This is what I’m doing. I write content by my own. I read about that topic and after I write something about this. I try to give quality content to the riders because more quality content is higher paying ads will appear on your site. Only thing that I don’t do by my selves is web site. I hire some web designer to do it for me. In the future I will make course for the web designer and after I will do all by my own.

You can’t select by your selves, you need to purchase all this from a service provided by Affiliate Junktion network and this is not free. It’s not really that much time when you think about it, especially for the return you can get from consistent effort. Yet I know there are other social marketing tasks competing for your attention. To build a body of content that is quickly indexed by the search engines, I suggest writing on your blog two to three times a week at minimum. So block that time off—for example: Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 9:00 to 9:30 am is blogging time. That’s the time you spend writing.

Next, two days a week, spend 30 minutes reading other blogs in your industry and leaving comments where appropriate when you have something of value to add. It positions you as being active and brings you to the attention of other people who you might not have known before.
#2: Plug in the Types of Posts and Topics You’re Going to Write About
This will make your blogging time more efficient because you don’t have to spend precious time trying to figure out what to write every time you’re scheduled to write.
Make a list of categories that are of interest to your audience. Take a look at your categories and make a list of 5 to 10 subtopics that relate to each category.
If you have 10 primary categories and 5 subtopics for each category, you have 50 blog posts at your fingertips. You can add another layer to your planning by assigning each topic to a style of post:

* Top 10 List
* Opinion
* Case Study
* Q&A
* Interview
Finally, assign each subtopic idea to a date on your editorial calendar and you’ve got four months of blog post ideas so you’re not facing a blank page. Of course this system serves only as a guide. There’s nothing stopping you from being spontaneous when a current event or hot topic in your business must be addressed with a blog post.
#3: Keep a Running List of Blog Topics
The more you blog, the more ideas you get. Everything you do, every conversation you have, every book, article or blog you read, becomes fodder for your own blog posts.
I have a long list of ideas and links that I find and want to share. Most of them will never become blog posts, but if I’m stuck or uninspired, I’ve got my list to prompt me.
#4: Write Several Blog Posts at One Time
Many bloggers use this time management strategy. Maybe you really do only have one hour a week to focus on your blog. If that’s the case, grab your laptop, head to your favorite coffee house and pump out a series of blog posts.

Over the last decade many software programs and blogging platforms have been created to make the process VERY EASY. As the blog writer, depending on which platform you use, you can just type your entry, press submit and it shows up on your blog for the world to see. Most bloggers don’t know any programming languages and are not “techies.” Starting a blog is one of the easiest ways out there to start a website. If you haven’t started one yet, why not try it? It can be very quick to set up and can be completely free.
Is it easy to start a blog?
It is very easy. Even if there are steps along the way that are confusing, there are plenty of resources to get the help you need. There are over 20 million blogs in existence, so it can’t be that difficult.
How much does it cost to blog?
There are many services that allow you to start a blog for free (see below). I suggest using one of the free services to get a basic feel for blogging and “get your feet wet.” Once you decide you want to stick with it and that you want to make money with your blog, I suggest moving up to a self-hosted blog (see below).
